Liar

Liar
By: Justine Larbalestier

Micah will freely admit that she’s a compulsive liar, but that may be the one honest thing she’ll ever tell you. Over the years she’s duped her classmates, her teachers, and even her parents, and she’s always managed to stay one step ahead of her lies.

That is, until her boyfriend dies under brutal circumstances and her dishonesty begins to catch up with her. But is it possible to tell the truth when lying comes as naturally as breathing?

Taking readers deep into the psyche of a young woman who will say just about anything to convince them—and herself—that she’s finally come clean, Liar is a bone-chilling thriller that will have readers see-sawing between truths and lies right up to the end. Honestly.

summary from book

My Rating: 4.5/5

Books like Liar are the reason as to why I started blogging in the first place. I want to stay up all night discussing this book, talking about it until there's nothing more to say. This is definitely the type of novel that needs to be discussed. There is so much I want to type in this review although I can't, not without giving too much away.

Liar in its entirety is like a roller coaster ride. Micah promises she's not lying to you but you can never be so sure because well, she's a compulsive liar, something she'll openly admit and does admit many times. She says things that are contradictory, going back and forth between "this is the real truth" and "I'm not being openly honest." or "I lied about that last part." This book did take me places that I didn't see coming. One tip I have for readers is to read everything carefully and take everything in. You will notice a lot more that way because it's impossible not to get things messed up when you're being dishonest.

I really commend Justine Larbalestier for writing this book. It is such a clever idea and one of the most exciting novels I've read so far this year. We're used to reading novels where protagonists hold nothing back. We're used to being told the truth and nothing else. That's why I found this book to be so interesting. It was nearly impossible for me to put down. I had to know what was coming next. I had to know the truth.

I know that many people may not be 100% pleased with the ending although I kind of assumed it would end the way it did. Personally, I really liked the conclusion. I think it added a lot to the story and it will keep you thinking long after you've finished it. The ending is very true to Micah and to who she is. I don't see how it could have ended any other way. After all, she's a liar, remember?

  5. The ending was just kind of blah. Realistic but *shrugs* I did enjoy this though.
